For villages

Lasting bonds. Real agency. Deeper purpose.

A member life that grows from within: members create it and contribute to it, and Longtable carries the organizing.

What members get

Known

  • You meet the same people again

A circle meets on a regular day, and repetition turns someone you like into a friend.

  • You know who will be there

Before you decide whether to go.

  • You are missed when you are away

The people who expect you on Thursday are the ones who notice on Friday.

Needed

  • What you know is worth something

Share what you know, or learn something new, with Share & Learn.

  • Everyone has a part

Someone leads, someone handles the practical side, someone keeps in touch.

  • It does not rest on one person

When the person who started it steps back, another member takes it on.

A true stakeholder

  • Start what is missing

Find people who share what you love. If the circle you want does not exist yet, start it.

  • It changes with you

A different day, a different place, as your routine or needs change.

  • It keeps going when you cannot get there

Your circle can meet online for the weeks when getting out is hard, or when you are away.

Members see who will be there before they decide to go, and when someone has been away, their circle is nudged to check in. Not another screen: no feed and nothing to scroll — the app’s job is to get members into the room.

What a circle could look like

Examples. Your circles will be whatever your neighbors choose.

  • Example

    Tuesdays · 9:30 AM

    Neighborhood walk

    The park, by the library

    5 neighbors going
  • Example

    Fridays · 10:00 AM

    Coffee and conversation

The corner café on Main Street

    6 neighbors going
  • Example

    Saturdays · 10:00 AM

    Garden swap

    A member’s front garden

    4 neighbors going

Why it matters

Loneliness is not always about being alone

It is about going unseen and feeling unneeded, and it can reach anyone, however full their days. Longtable helps communities answer that by helping members build relationships that deepen over time, alongside everything you already offer.

What makes it different

Four principles behind every circle

  1. Intimacy and consistency. The same faces, week after week, is how acquaintances become people you trust: about 50 hours together before two adults call each other friends (Jeffrey Hall, University of Kansas).

  2. Shared identity, not only shared activity. A shared activity brings people into the room; a shared identity is what keeps them together. A circle becomes “us.”

  3. Reciprocity. One neighbor teaches knitting, another the iPad. Everyone is a valued contributor, not just an audience.

  4. Active stakeholders, not passive participants. People care for what they help shape. When members lead, they own it, and it lasts.

What your village gets

Members who stay, and groups that grow without adding staff time.

  1. Members who renew, and bring friends

Members with friends in the village stay, and speak well of it to the people they know.

  2. New members find their people quickly

A new member can find three neighbors who share an interest and be expected on Thursday.

  3. Groups that grow without adding staff time

Longtable carries the organizing of every circle, for your coordinator and your volunteers.

  4. Leadership shared by many

Every circle shares out the running, so more members lead, and the same few volunteers do not carry it alone.

  5. Reaching the quieter members

Members who rarely come to the larger events have a few neighbors of their own.

  6. It sits beside what you already use

Your system stays the record of members, help requests and volunteers. Longtable carries the small groups that meet between your events.

  7. A home for every interest

A circle can be as particular as its members like. Four members and one shared enthusiasm is enough.

Close to home, and beyond

Circles near home, wherever members live

Members find circles near where they live, across the whole village. With Share & Learn — the village’s own spirit of neighbors helping neighbors, applied to what members know — they pass on what they know and keep learning themselves, one person to another, by request. And they can join circles online with people far beyond it.

A space of your own

Your village, under its own name, for members only

A page under your name and colors, invitation links you control, and circles private to your members by default. Basic membership is free, and any member can try full membership free — circles and Share & Learn included — before deciding anything. After that, each member can take a membership of their own, or the village can join as a whole, at a reduced rate for everyone.

Built for the people who use it: large type, simple steps, and it works on any phone, tablet or computer. I will introduce it to members in person or online, and help anyone who wants to get started.

Example: longtablecircles.com/communities/alder-park — Alder Park Village is a demonstration we built rather than a client. No feed, no advertising, nothing sold; everyone on Longtable is a verified real person, and addresses and ages are never shown.

A bigger vision for later life

Later life is a time to belong, and a time to shape what comes next.

Longtable is growing to serve both. We are building toward keeping family close; members mentoring a younger generation who can learn from their experience; and a way for members who want it to put the wisdom of their generation to work on the problems that matter most to them and their communities. Each leads to the same place: greater agency, deeper purpose, and a fuller part in the world around them.

These are directions we are building toward, not features available today.

What I am asking for

I would like to introduce Longtable to your village and your members.
